Is Social Media Damaging Your Job Prospects

You’ve got lots of enthusiasm, excellent qualifications, and relevant experience. Your references are going to sing your praises, and your CV is professionally put together and eye-catching. Yet you still find it hard to get a job. Why is that? The fact of the matter is that your social media profiles could be hampering your job search.

Traditionally, employees would send for references, and find out more about their candidates during an interview. As businesses are looking to cut costs and speed up the recruitment process, they’ve found a new way of finding out what a prospective employee is really like. That’s right, they look you up on social media.

It’s not just a few companies who have adopted this practice, it’s a common procedure. Is your social media profile giving the right message about you? For example, if you add to Facebook the manager of a company you’ve applied for a job to, they’re sure to look at your past posting history. The number one rule is to never comment about your prospective employers, or make disparaging comments about jobs in general.
A heartfelt Monday morning tweet of, ‘I really don’t want to go into work today’, is unlikely to go down well with a HR department. It’s not only what you say that will be examined. The most looked at form of social media by employers is Instagram, with a staggering 93% of businesses using it to find out more about their potential employees. It’s a scary, but true, fact that pictures that you post after a wild night out a year ago can ruin your chances of landing a dream job today. References to binge drinking or drug taking, or racist or intolerant comments, are a sure fire way to ensure that your application is on the fast track to the waste paper basket, however suited you may be to the job.

Before you apply for jobs, tidy up of all your social media profiles. Your aim is to convey a professional image, so remove anything that doesn’t portray you in a perfect light. Your friends on social media may know when you’re joking, but employers don’t have that benefit. You only get one shot to get the job that you’ve always wanted, don’t let your social media posts get in the way. Here are some facts about social media and its impact on finding a job.
